Laurel Line Debate

During a regular meeting of the Chapter, an informal debate broke out over the proposed "New Laurel Line".

Several Lawmakers have proposed a light rail system that would run from Carbondale to Nanticoke and serve the communities in between.

Ed Miller thought it was a good idea and wondered why they abandoned the first Laurel Line.

This plan was in response to the traffic congestion on I-81. It was suggested that the median of the Interstate may be part of the Right-of-Way.

We all laughed and acknowledged that such a plan is decades away and now only exists as concept or plan on paper.

We also realize that today we have a car culture and everyone wants to go on their terms. However, if the service was convenient, some people might forgo the car and use it to commute to maybe Downtown Scranton or Wilkes-Barre.

2009 Moscow Picnic Meeting

Despite some rain the picnic turned out good, with Chapter Members eating under the covered area in front of the Station.

Our annual Picnic Meetings at Moscow have proved to be a popular event.

The historic DL&W Buildings were a great place to see some slide programs on Milk Train and the former railroads, blast furnaces and shops at the massive Bethlehem Steel.

Part of it now is a Casino. A museum is in the process of being built to tell the story of the Steel Mill and its place in American History.

It just seems fitting that we have our summer get-together on the Station grounds.

Laurel Line Facts

The Laurel Line last ran in 1952. This means that in 2008, the line has been not operated as a whole for 56 years.

The Pittston to Wilkes-Barre segment last saw a CONRAIL train circa 1976.

This section of the line has been abandoned for 32 years and traced of it are getting hard to find.

What would we give now to have a mass transit system like the Laurel Line in this era of high fuel costs ?

New Rocky Glen Park Historical Marker

At the beginning of August, 2008, the PA State Museum and Historical Commission dedicated a new historical marker near the former Rocky Glen Park.

The webmaster has yet to visit the new marker. The marker recalls this popular park that had its heyday when the Laurel Line connected it to Scranton, Wikes-Barre and all the other surrounding communities.
