Work on the 3713, May 2001

As of Saturday, May 26, we have 3050 hours and $154,200 in the 3713 Boston and Maine rebuild project. Bill Fredrickson has finished repairing the rigid staybolt holes on the right side and the bulkhead for reaming and rethreading. Bill had to resize 250 rigid staybolt holes to a standard size. This will save the cost of making special staybolts. Bill also had to pad weld the outside of the firebox to bring it back to standard size. These areas were thin, but was just passable in thickness.

The studs on the bottom mud ring and inside the firebox will have to be replaced. The studs on the bottom of the boiler will need to be replaced because of not being installed properly from the previous railroad. This will be added to our list of things to be done.

We ordered and received 400 rigid staybolts from Steam Services of America for $5689.50. The quality of the bolts are excellent. All boiler studs are made and most have been installed on the boiler. These are for all of the boiler appliances to be mounted to.

The firebox, boiler, and smokebox were needle scaled and cleaned out. The firebox ultrasound test is done and the firebox is mapped. This took 126 hours to do. This is to meet the 1999 FRA rules for the firebox. The firebox is in good shape. Bill is now working on the left side and the inside of the firebox and making repairs to the firebox.
