Work
on the 3713, July 2001
As of Sunday, July
5,2001,we have 3254.5 hours and $161.175 in the 3713 Boston and Maine
rebuild project. Bill Fredrickson has finished repairing the rigid staybolt
holes on the right side and the bulkhead for reaming and rethreading.
Bill had to resize 250 rigid staybolt holes to a standard size. He contiues
to work on the staybolts.
This will save the cost of having to make special staybolts. Bill also
had to pad weld the outside of the firebox to bring it back to standard
size. These areas were thin, just passable in thickness.
The studs on the bottom of the mud ring and inside the firebox will have
to be replaced. The studs were not properly installed by a previous railroad.
This will be added to our list of items to be done.
We ordered and received 400 rigid staybolts from Steam Services of America
for $5689.50. The quailty of the bolts are excellent.
All boiler studs have been made and most have been installed on the boiler.
The studs will be used to mount all the boiler appliances.
The firebox, boiler and smokebox were needle scaled and cleaned out. The
firebox ultrasound test is done and the firebox is mapped. This took 126
hours to do. The firebox is in good shape. Bill is now working on the
left side and inside the firebox making repairs to the firebox.
